A chemist from the University of The Golden State, Berkeley, was among the triad of scientists granted the Nobel Prize for Chemistry on Wednesday.
Omar Yaghi, the Berkeley professor ; Susumu Kitagawa from Kyoto College in Japan; and Richard Robson from the College of Melbourne in Australia were acknowledged for their work because the 1990 s to establish a new form of molecular style that combines metal ions and carbon-based particles, according to a launch from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which carries out the Nobel Reward.
The metal-organic structures can gather water or shop hazardous gases. The release kept in mind that the frameworks “may contribute to resolving a few of humankind’s greatest obstacles.”
The release states the structures are basically “areas” because of the large spaces that form in the structure. A Nobel board member compared it to Hermione Granger’s wonderful bag in the 7th Harry Potter book, the Associated Press reported Her tiny bag eventually contained a camping tent, publications and other stipulations. Similarly, the frameworks look tiny but can hold a whole lot.
Because the trio’s explorations, greater than 100, 000 metal-organic structures have been created, according to a press release from Berkeley.
